Riverside firefighters quickly handle small brush fire that may have been ignited by fireworks
Firefighters quickly contained a small brush fire that burned in the Sycamore Highlands Park area of Riverside on Saturday, which authorities believe may have been started by teenagers lighting fireworks.
The blaze was reported at around 9:15 p.m. in the 5700 block of Fair Isle Drive, according to the Riverside Fire Department.
It took crews nearly three hours to control the fire, which burned about one-quarter of dry vegetation in the area, they said.
"Several witnesses in the park reported four males of high school age in the park lighting off fireworks into the canyon from Sycamore Highlands Park," firefighters shared in a post on Facebook. "Witnesses provided a possible description of the vehicle of the potential suspects."
A Riverside Police Department helicopter was requested to assist with the incident, as well as an arson investigator.
"The arson investigator arrived on scene and took the witness' information," the post said. "The witnesses showed the area where the fireworks were launched from, but there were no remnants of any devices."
According to firefighters, a battalion chief had approached the area where a car was parked, but it sped away with its lights shut off before they could make contact.
No civilians or firefighters were injured in the incident, which remains under investigation.
